Six bidders eager for a slice of old Highton real estate contested the auction of a much-loved family home offered for the first time in 75 years.
The modest three-bedroom house at 4 Lichen Grove sold under the hammer for $710,000 on Saturday.
The location of the 1012sq m block, within walking distance of Highton Village and the Barwon River, drove strong interest, Barry Plant, Geelong agent Mitchell Falzon said.

Mr Falzon said the competition showed Geelong buyers were still out there and keen to purchase, even in the face of tougher coronavirus restrictions.
He said the Geelong buyers, who plan to rent out the property for now, couldn’t pass up an opportunity to purchase in the tightly-held location.

“The street is one of the best streets in Highton, it’s on the top of Geelong and everyone loves the views,” Mr Falzon said.
“Everyone saw value in the land.”
“(The buyers) just saw it come up in Lichen Grove and thought they had better grab it because they don’t come up very often.”
The big backyard offers lots of space to play with.
The weatherboard house has a loungeroom, kitchen/meals area and one bathroom but the large backyard was perhaps its biggest attraction.
It was listed with a price guide of $650,000 to $715,000.
